Sump Pump vs. French Drain: Which Does Your Westchester Basement Need?
People often treat these as alternatives, but they do different jobs. A French drain is a perforated pipe in gravel that collects water. A sump pump moves collected water out of the pit. Many systems use both.
Quick diagnosis checklist
- Interior drain plus sump pump. A drain along the inside perimeter collects water that gets under or through the walls and carries it to a sump pit, where a pump discharges it outdoors.
- Exterior French drain. A drain outside the foundation or in the yard intercepts water before it reaches the wall. It may flow by gravity to a lower spot, or to a sump.
- Gutters, downspouts and grading. Surface water control is the least expensive part and reduces the load on any drain.
- When a pump is needed. If there is no lower place for water to drain by gravity, a pump is needed to lift it out.
- Backup power. A pump depends on power, so a battery or water-powered backup is worth pricing.
DIY or call a pro?
Surface drainage work is within many homeowners' reach. Installing an interior drain, a sump pit or an exterior French drain involves breaking concrete or digging deeply, and is usually a job for a contractor.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both?
Often. A drain collects, and a pump discharges. Ask your contractor to explain where water goes.
Where should the pump discharge?
Well away from the foundation and, ideally, downhill so it does not run back to the house.
